Within the Commonwealth, formerly known as the British Empire, there has only ever been one Diamond Jubilee. Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee- that is sixty years on the throne- on June 20th 1897.

Elizabeth II- Queen of many independent realms such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Jamaica- will mark her Diamond Jubilee from June 2nd to 5th 2012, around her 86th birthday. Her Majesty’s Government of the United Kingdom has announced a national celebration at this time in honour of the event and have nominated an additional Bank Holiday.

Diamond Jubilee Bank Holiday

The Bank Holiday in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will be held on Tuesday 5th June. In order to form a long weekend of celebration; the later May Bank Holiday will be moved to Monday 4 June.

Other plans to mark the Diamond Jubilee include:

. A Diamond Jubilee Pageant at Windsor Castle in May 2012.

. Special Jubilee lunches at Buckingham Palace.

. A River Pageant on the Thames.

The event promises to be even more memorable than the Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 1977 and the more recent Golden Jubilee (50 years) in 2002. On both of these occasions the nation was swept up in a royal wave of celebration and goodwill.
